There are some incredible wineries creating boutique and unique wine experiences all across Australia.
Each month we profile seven experiences worth visiting.
It is known that ‘great wine is made in the vineyard’ and we set out to select an exact location that delivered every advantage of a cool climate, undulating topography and ancient soils. So we found our hidden gem, located down a county lane in the dress circle Warramate foothills of the Yarra Valley. It is from here we set out to make wine with the charm of Northern Italy but the provenance of the majestic Yarra Valley.
Coombe Farm combines the provenance and heritage of Coombe the Melba Estate with cool climate Yarra Valley fruit to create small batch wines of exquisite complexity.
Just 5km north of the Melba Estate, the 120-acre Coombe Farm vineyard is one of the oldest in the valley, and is still owned and operated by the descendants of Dame Nellie Melba, the Vestey family. Having supplied grapes to some of Australia’s most recognised producers, an increasing portion of fruit is now being grown and selected specifically for the Coombe Farm brand.
The Coombe Farm cellar door, located at the Melba Estate, offers stand up tastings, platters and light lunch options or simply a leisurely afternoon of wine and croquet in the infamous ‘hedge’ area. The newly launched Petite degustation tasting experience offers an unmissable indulgence – a tutored tasting of four wines with seasonal bites paired to match.
Cosmo Wines is the epitome of small, boutique and independent winemaking. Operating out of a small winery on the edge of the Yarra Valley & Melbourne CBD, Cosmo makes a range of wines, but it is sparkling wine that is the true passion of founder, grape grower, winemaker, and cellar door manager, Lindsay Corby.
Did you know that liqueur is added to most sparkling wine? Or that sparkling wine is stored upside down and the neck frozen to removing yeast cells through a process call disgoring? Learn all that and more while you create your perfect sparkling wine under the personal direction of Lindsay himself.
Helen & Joey Estate is a family owned winery producing outstanding cool climate wines from our 85 acre vineyard located in the Yarra Valley sub region of Gruyere which is home to many internationally recognised and iconic producers who all share the same soil type and aspect of our Estate.
The Helen & Joey Estate Logo is represented by the Unicorn. Helen believes that Unicorns are magical creatures. Mysterious, Powerful and Elegant. This symbology holds beautiful synergy with the enigma of wine, and more personally for Helen, the sense of dreams coming true.
Steels Gate Wines - when two families come together to make a winery come to life, anything is possible.
Steels Gate is a boutique vineyard and winery located at the upper northern edge of the Yarra Valley. Almost completely surrounded by National Park, this 82 acre (33 hectare) property grows Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir grapes across 6 acre (2.5 hectare) of vines mostly planted in the late 1970’s. Enjoy your private dinning in a picturesque hillside setting at Dixons Creek.
“real wine, real people, real character”
Rob Dolan Wines is a family owned winery situated at the gateway of the Yarra Valley, just 30 minutes from Melbourne’s CBD in Victoria, Australia. Enjoy a behind the scenes tour of our winery with your own dedicated wine host. View the Crow’s Nest (Stone and Crow Cheese Maturation Room) before sitting down to a private tasting in our barrel room.
Sit back and relax at a private table on our deck or in our gardens with your own dedicated wine host and enjoy four wine tastings from our True Colours range paired with four Stone and Crow cheeses plus a personal selection from Rob & Jack, chosen each week based on the ripest cheeses and the best wine to match.
Ninth-generation winemaker Dominique Portet chose the cool climate of aptly named Coldstream in the Yarra Valley as home to the eponymous winery he founded in 2000. It was the culmination of a tenacious search for grapegrowing terroir to rival that of his native Bordeaux – but also the start of a new chapter in a winemaking story that has its roots in France in the early 1700s. Now son Ben – generation 10 – heads the winemaking team, firmly observing the central tenets of this young yet historic estate: respect for tradition, understanding of site, and an open mind towards contemporary practices that shape wines that are ever more refined and delicious.
Our platinum tour and tasting shows you the inner workings of a family winery. You will be guided on a tour of the winery where you explore the latest technology and the oldest technique whilst tasting the new vintage direct from the barrel. The tasting will then progress to a tasting of five of our newly released wines including our very limited ‘Andre’ Cabernet Sauvignon.
